چکیده
Under the assumption that the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters estimated out to an outer hydrostatic radius is constant, it is possible to constrain the cosmological parameters by using the angular diameter distance relation with redshift. We applied this to a sample of galaxy clusters from redshifts of 0.1 to 0.94, for which published gas and total masses are available from X-ray data. After scaling the gas fraction values to the r500 radius (Evrard, Metzler, & Navarro 1996), we find an apparent decrease in gas fractions at high redshifts, which can be scaled back to the mean gas fraction value at z ∼ 0.1 to 0.2 of (0.060 ± 0.002) h−3/2, when Ωm = 0.55 −0.23 (Ωm +ΩΛ = 1, 1-σ statistical error). However, various sources of systematic errors can contribute to the change in gas mass fraction from one cluster to another, and we discuss such potential problems in this method.

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...

متن کاملSupernova Ia and Galaxy Cluster Gas Mass Fraction Constraints on Dark Energy
We use the Riess et al. (2004) supernova Ia apparent magnitude versus redshift data and the Allen et al. (2004) galaxy cluster gas mass fraction versus redshift data to constrain dark energy models. These data provide complementary constraints that when combined together significantly restrict model parameters and favor slowly-evolving dark energy density models, close to the Einstein cosmologi...
متن کاملAnnealing a Follow-up Program: Improvement of the Dark Energy Figure of Merit for Optical Galaxy Cluster Surveys
The precision of cosmological parameters derived from galaxy cluster surveys is limited by uncertainty in relating observable signals to cluster mass. We demonstrate that a small mass-calibration follow-up program can significantly reduce this uncertainty and improve parameter constraints, particularly when the follow-up targets are judiciously chosen. To this end, we apply a simulated annealin...
متن کاملCLUSTERS OF GALAXIES: Probes of Cosmological Structure and Galaxy Evolution
Clusters of galaxies emerge as nodes in the gravitationally evolving cosmic web of dark matter and baryons that defines the large-scale structure of the Universe. X-ray and optical observations offer plentiful evidence of clusters’ dynamical youth, yet bulk measures derived from these observations are tightly correlated, indicating a high degree of structural regularity that makes the populatio...
